Gateway Classic Cars of Dallas is excited to present a RAD 1987
Mazda RX-7 Turbo II! While they are not the only automaker to
utilize a Wankel rotary engine, Mazda surely comes to mind when
discussing this unique motor design. That can be attributed to
their dedicated use of the rotary engine across three generations
of the RX-7, from 1978 to 2002. Its obvious benefits include a
relatively small size allowing it to be located behind the front
axle for Ideal weight distribution. These motors are also
inherently smooth, so much so that early models were fitted with a
buzzer to alert drivers of an approaching redline. The small
displacement, 1.3 liters, was a deliberate move by Mazda to make
the new RX-7 more appealing in the Japanese market as the country's
annual road tax is more affordable for engines displacing less than
1.5 liters. On this side of the pond, the roughly 2,400-pound curb
weight and lively handling made it an instant hit. In fact, nearly
475,000 first-generation RX-7s were produced with some 80% sold in
the US alone. For the gen-two "FC" RX-7, which ran from 1985-to
1992, Mazda completely restyled the exterior to reflect successful
American market vehicles like the Porsche 928. The live rear axle
was replaced by a fully independent setup, recirculating ball
steering was swapped for rack-and-pinion precision and disc brakes
were newly standard. When the Turbo II model was introduced in
1987, it featured a twin-scroll turbocharger, air-to-air
intercooler, and limited-slip differential. A commercial and
critical success, the Turbo II was on Car and Driver's Top 10 list
in 1987The original Satin Gold Metallic (1A) finish on this 1987
RX-7 looks to be in good overall condition with nice body panels
and original Turbo II side decals. Features include color-keyed
aero side mirrors, sunroof - which is shown to be operational -
rear wiper and pop-up headlights. Rare, factory-optional 16" BBS
wheels with Mazda center caps are wrapped in Yokohama Avid Ascent
GT tires. Sized 205/60 front and rear, they show 2021 date codes.
Disc brakes are fitted all around with four-piston front calipers
featuring cast Mazda logos. A period correct, Racing Beat full
exhaust is installed with dual outlets. This RX-7 has a tidy
undercarriage as it has only been driven on clear summer days. This
